ABOUT
SUSAN HUME

Drawing upon a tapestry of lifelong and global experiences, my journey into interior design is as unique as the spaces that I create.

My foundation is built upon years of extensive remodeling and decorating of my own homes, as well as those of family, friends and eventually clients. People ask me where I received my formal design training and I sheepishly admit that I don’t have any. I honestly (if not immodestly) believe that my ability to envision a remodel or refreshed interior is something that has always been innate to me. Having traveled to nearly 100 countries, I draw design inspiration from a kaleidoscope of cultures and aesthetics. But I wouldn’t want to give the impression that a homeowner should hire me just because I have good taste.

My true ‘superpower’ as an interior designer lies in the art of refinement—shaping the scale and scope of a design project to align with a client’s needs and wants, and of course to budget and timetable. My strong project management ability is thanks to a high-profile career in international finance (qualified by degrees and certificates in economics and business at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Stanford universities). I bring to the table a suite of skills that serves my clients well—a careful listener and clear communicator, meticulous attention to detail, a shrewd negotiator, adept at problem-solving, and ability to manage multifaceted plans and difficult counterparts (yes, that means contractors).

Over the past several years, after leaving international finance back in the “other Washington” (DC, that is), I have enjoyed applying these skills and experiences as a real estate broker helping clients buy and sell their homes on Bainbridge Island. My greatest satisfaction has been helping homeowners envision how to revitalize their homes to improve their lifestyles. I am now channeling my passion exclusively into interior design (although I can still make referrals to excellent real estate brokers).  â€‹
